Review by L. Major for Hardest Times: The Trauma of Long-Term Unemployment Rating: I purchased this title as part of an effort to understand what happened to my family when my father was fired and was subsequently unable to replace his job. The book was almost unbearably sad to read, but it rang absolutely true to the way I remember this crisis and its effect on my father and our family, especially the overwhelming sense of shame we all lived with. Mr. Cottle lists his research and statistics in the first chapter, and then he simply tells stories of trauma experienced by the various men he interviewed. The stories haunt you long after you've put the book back on the shelf. They make you wonder how to really help these men and their families. And you're also left with a more compassionate view of the long-term unemployed. They aren't lazy, useless folks to be disposed of, but human beings with souls who have experienced what amounts to a life tragedy. They need our compassion, not our judgment.

Sadly, a woman who has kids and a fulltime job should probably find a wife to help her manage. Her mother might be a good bet. I know my sister depends on the grandparents a lot, and I’m lucky enough to have a husband who has a flexible schedule and can fill in when the kids are sick or have school things.

I wish I had a wife, though.

It is getting better, though, as men take more responsibility for kids, and more grandparents want to play an active role in helping out. A mom who has managed a household and a full-time job is probably a fantastic multi-tasker, though, and should be an excellent employee after she gets through this juggling stage in her life. It’s entirely probably that she’s a good employee even as she handles all these aspects.

It is because they have kids without a husband. No one then to help watch the kids, go to the doctor, etc. Have to take time off of work to do all this crap. This is a hassle. Employers do not like hassle. Hassle will be eliminated.

B/c they women care about their children more than men do.

Specifically, it means that they are more likely take time off work to take care of sick child or to take child to soccer practice, and are less likely to concentrate on work as they think about kindergarden, school, shopping for kids clothes, etc.

@solitaryfracture – nah dude, you are the orchestrator of this thing, you started it! I am just standing with you WE need to help those senators that are trying so desperitely to help us. I was near tears yesterday watching MIss Stabenow, Harry Reid, Sheldon Whitehouse, broke my heart, even if I was not unemployed… However, these Rebs just don’t give a shit! I was watching the Rachel Maddow show last night and did you know that some rebs called us ANIMALS, HOBOS, LEECHES, etc? THATS WRONG!
